This is Kit's first vacation in Vermont, away from Old Greenwich, her sailboat, and Allie, her best friend. It looks as if this will be a summer with absolutely nothing to do, lonely and boring. Kit's father is sick, her mother worried, there is no one to talk to but the farm people from whom her parents have rented an ancient crooked house. And her first meeting with the farmer's son is anything but promising.
